THE OIL MUSEUM IN UMBRIA
A passion with ancient
roots
Olive Oil Museum: Our Drops of History.
There’s a scent that describes Umbria better than any word: that of freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil. This is where the journey begins at the Bartolomei Olive Oil Museum, one of the most fascinating olive oil museums in Umbria, immersed in the olive oil tradition and rural history of the region.
Crossing the museum’s threshold, you enter an ancient tale tied to the production of extra virgin olive oil. Period photographs, historical documents, original tools, and antique oil-processing machinery recount the work of the oil mills of old. Among them, a 16th-century, entirely manual olive press stands out, a symbol of the history of olive oil in Italy.
Leading the tour are the Bartolomei Brothers, producers of Umbrian extra virgin olive oil for generations. Since the late 19th century, the Bartolomei oil mill has carried on a family tradition of olive oil production, passed down from father to son, based on respect for the land, quality, and a passion for oil.
Room after room, visitors discover that oil is not just a food, but a true ancient art. A knowledge that dates back over 6,000 years. The museum illustrates every stage of the extra virgin olive oil production chain: from olive cultivation to olive harvest, from pressing to bottling.
Outside, the view opens onto the hills of Montecchio, in the heart of Umbria, one of the areas most suited to the production of quality extra virgin olive oil. An ideal setting for those seeking food and wine experiences in Umbria and rural tourism.
The Oil Museum is spread across several exhibition rooms dedicated to the history of oil, agricultural archaeology, ancient olive presses, and traditional olive processing tools. Each object tells a fundamental story of Umbrian rural culture.
We’ve divided the museum into several exhibition rooms, displaying precious archaeological finds, ancient machinery used to process oil from various historical periods, and antiques.
Visiting the Bartolomei Oil Museum means enjoying a cultural and food and wine experience in Umbria, discovering the history of extra virgin olive oil, and getting to know those who still produce it today using traditional methods.
